For those who don&39;t like Robin, she plays a tiny role in this story. The story starts off with a very strong premise: A former patient, Tanya Bigelow, wants his help in contacting Milo to get some help in checking out what seems to be a death-bed confession from her adopted mother, Patty, a highly regarded ER nurse. Alex correctly points out that there may be no crime at all, but Tanya wants to know. Tanya becomes Alex&39;s patient again as her obsessive-compulsive tendencies resurface in the wake of becoming an orphan for the second time. Part of the appeal of the story is that you&39;ll be rooting for Tanya throughout. That makes it easier to emotionally relate to the mystery. The book soon bogs down into an extensive procedural that involves checking out all of the crimes associated with the areas around the places where Patty and Tanya had lived. Very little of this digging turns out to be relevant to solving the Patty mystery . . . but new questions arise as the investigation triggers strong reactions that pull Alex and Milo toward different puzzles. Along the way, you&39;ll meet some pretty unappealing (at best) and disgusting (at worst) characters who will usually surprise you by acting more unpleasantly than you expect. I felt like I needed a long shower with lots of soap to get the filth off me after reading this book. The characters are either drawn in very simple terms, or stay exactly the same throughout the book, with the exception of Tanya. Thank God for that! Otherwise, you will often feel like you are reading an overly plot-driven novel where the characters don&39;t matter. If you like intricate plots, you&39;ll feel like you&39;ve got a dandy here. For my taste, the plot development seemed like it was overdone. I would have been happier with a simpler plot that moved along faster in a shorter book. have to agree with "C.Green".. I am a big fan of Lincoln Child, especially of his solo-novels! I LOVED "UTOPIA" and I liked "DEATHMATCH", so I could not wait to find out what Child would pull out of his head with his next book. When I finally received the Hardcover (I never buy Hardcovers unless I REALLY cant wait for a paperback)I had to start reading straight away. After opening the tasty Cover, with its very nice and promising title picture, the first few pages seemed promising. The further I went though, the less it kept me from getting a nice cold drink from the fridge.. It does have a slight touch from "UTOPIA" and his usual style of writing, but as the last reviewer on this page said, its all been heard and said before. Very predictable (except for the idea at the end) and just not as exciting and interesting as I had hoped. What also disturbed me was all the scientific and especially MEDICAL babbling.. way to many pages wasted and made boring by all the medical words which probably only a Dr. could understand anyway.. It was like reading a report. Well - I did not hate the book, as it did have its moments and also a satisfying good ending. I recommend it to the real fans, but warn you not to expect his ultimate work to date.

This book completely took me by surprise. I found the lead characters immediately engaging, and the arc of their relationship throughout the book was for me it&39;s most compelling element. The delicacy with which the love story within the book is handled provides the perfect balance with the explosive action and adrenaline-pumped pace of the story itself. Cynics may imply that the book&39;s theme is exploitative. I argue that it rather takes the daring approach of using a controversial topic merely as a starting point for a deeply interesting and mainly separate story. It has nothing whatsoever to to with Diana herself (her name isn&39;t even mentioned), and I think that the author&39;s bravery in risking the wrath of those who misinterprate the book&39;s pith is to be respected.

have to agree with "C.Green".. I am a big fan of Lincoln Child, especially of his solo-novels! I LOVED "UTOPIA" and I liked "DEATHMATCH", so I could not wait to find out what Child would pull out of his head with his next book. When I finally received the Hardcover (I never buy Hardcovers unless I REALLY cant wait for a paperback)I had to start reading straight away. After opening the tasty Cover, with its very nice and promising title picture, the first few pages seemed promising. The further I went though, the less it kept me from getting a nice cold drink from the fridge.. It does have a slight touch from "UTOPIA" and his usual style of writing, but as the last reviewer on this page said, its all been heard and said before. Very predictable (except for the idea at the end) and just not as exciting and interesting as I had hoped. What also disturbed me was all the scientific and especially MEDICAL babbling.. way to many pages wasted and made boring by all the medical words which probably only a Dr. could understand anyway.. It was like reading a report. Well - I did not hate the book, as it did have its moments and also a satisfying good ending. I recommend it to the real fans, but warn you not to expect his ultimate work to date.

This book completely took me by surprise. I found the lead characters immediately engaging, and the arc of their relationship throughout the book was for me it&39;s most compelling element. The delicacy with which the love story within the book is handled provides the perfect balance with the explosive action and adrenaline-pumped pace of the story itself. Cynics may imply that the book&39;s theme is exploitative. I argue that it rather takes the daring approach of using a controversial topic merely as a starting point for a deeply interesting and mainly separate story. It has nothing whatsoever to to with Diana herself (her name isn&39;t even mentioned), and I think that the author&39;s bravery in risking the wrath of those who misinterprate the book&39;s pith is to be respected.
